MICHAEL A. MORRISON is a New York-based writer, teacher,
and collector of theatrical memorabilia. Formerly a Shakespearean actor,
he received his doctorate in theatre from the City University of New York
and has contributed theatre- and drama-related articles and criticism to
a number of publications including The New York Times, the Village
Voice, the London Daily Telegraph, Stagebill, Theatre History Studies,
Theatre Survey, and New Theatre Quarterly.
I began writing the book this site is based on (published
by Cambridge University Press in the United States in the autumn of 1997
and in the United Kingdom and worldwide in January 1998) nearly a decade
ago when I realized there were still living witnesses who could recall
Barrymore's legendary Richard III and Hamlet seventy years earlier. In
ensuing years, I interviewed many of these witnesses including Sir John
Gielgud, Dame Gwen Ffrangcon-Davies, Maurice Evans, and Helen Hayes,
and also drew upon newly uncovered sources to recreate Barrymore's acclaimed
performances. I enjoy hearing from readers, potential readers, and
visitors to the site, so please write if you have any comments or questions.
